Half Syn Dorei
A) Basics
No deviation from standard D&D description of Half High-elves unless otherwise noted. There are several organizational and cultural differences that describe how Half Syn-Dorei interact with this world.
Half Syn-Dorei do not have a culture of their own. Unlike other Kal-Dorei, Half Syn-Dorei do not exclusively live within their human parent’s society. Half Syn-Dorei are permitted to live and operate within Pure Blood Syn-Dorei friendly cities and culture. This does not mean they are treated well. It only means they are accepted.
Due to the harsh reality of how the world views Syn-Dorei, their child births are exclusively within the safe confines of Syn-Dorei friendly cities. It is well known that due to the culling, where Kal-Dorei nearly drove the Syn-Dorei to extinction, the total world population of Syn-Dorei is dangerously low. Regardless of the circumstances of a half Syn-Dorei’s birth, they will spend their early childhood years within Syn Dorei friendly cities.
B) Roleplaying
Half Syn-Dorei, like all Half Dorei, live a life of persecution, prejudgment, mistrust and rejection. Even though Half Syn-Dorei are treated slightly better than other Half Dorei (within Syn-Dorei society), they still face harsh realities outside their homelands. For this reason, many half Syn-Dorei tend to pursue career paths where they do not need a lot of contact with other people. in Syn-Dorei society, Half Syn-Dorei have often been the victims of hazing, witch hunts, or accused of wrong doing when there is an unsolved crime. May scholars suspect that the reason why Half Syn-Dorei are accepted in their Dorei parent’s society, is because the birth rate for Pure blooded Syn-Dorei is very low. In addition, the population as a whole of Syn-Dorei has never fully recovered from the mass genocide conducted by the Kal-Dorei. For this reason, Half Syn-Dorei tend to be lonely, stoic, and victims of the world's cesspools.
In spite of their low social standing, many Half Syn-Dorei have used their talents to make a life for themselves. Many become soldiers, laborers, service workers, hunters, farmers, reclusive scholars, researchers, scouts, or sell swords. Along with many of their natural talents, Half Syn-Dorei typically have refined physical features. They tend to be attractive and athletic. Their good looks tend to give them a chance in life. However, human city-states (outside of the Federation) of ill repute tend to abuse Half Syn-Dorei. Females are sometimes captured and forced into a life of slavery as brothel workers. Males sometimes suffer the same fate.
Unfortunately, a Half Syn-Dorei’s physical appeal can only take them so far. It is very rare that a person of high stature would seriously consider a half Syn-Dorei as a life mate. As such Half Syn-Dorei tend to remain in the lower economical classes of society. Exceptions do exists, such as if a Half Syn-Dorei creates their own wealth, or they inherit wealth from their human or Syn-Dorei parent.
Prejudice, rejection, abject poverty, and loneliness are all factors that tend to make Half Syn-Dorei emotionally unstable. If they are lucky enough to find true love, they cling to the other person like nothing else in the world matters.
C) Racial features:
Expertise: All Half Syn-Dorei are keenly aware that their hybrid nature will give them a limited future. They know they will have many hardships and hindrances in life. As such, Half Syn-Dorei devote themselves to becoming very adept at one particular skill which they have learned. It is their hope that through expertise, they will better prepare themselves to deal with life. As such, all Half Syn-Dorei are allowed to designate “expertise” to any one of the following (choose only one):
Proficiency: Half Syn-Dorei find themselves at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder. It is difficult for them to secure gainful employment, much less obtain economic security through marriage to the middle or upper class. 1) Reaction adjustment: Permanent -4 to reaction adjustment (Charisma type) to all races. This is changed to -6 to Quel-Dorei and -8 to Kal-Dorei. Other races simply do not understand or trust Half Dorei, let alone Half Syn-Dorei. Note that initial reaction adjustments can be overcome in time, if the Half Syn-Dorei can prove their worth.
2) Alignment: Due to their lack of a formal society and cultural identity, Half Syn-Dorei can only be a Chaotic alignment (CG, CN, CE).
3) Classes Allowed: Warrior, Ranger, Priest, Druid, Rogue, Mage, Warlock (7 total).
4) Half Syn-Dorei cannot secure medical care in non Syn-Dorei friendly cities and cultures.
5) Half Syn-Dorei are always charged 25% additional costs for all goods and services, even in Syn-Dorei friendly cultures.
6) Fear of Rejection & Loneliness: If a Half Syn-Dorei ever loses a significant other, such as a spouse (or other long term relationship) due to rejection or death, the Half Syn-Dorei will fall into a near catatonic state of deep depression. the character will receive a -3 penalty to all game mechanics for 1D8 days per approximate number of months they were in the relationship. Example: If a character was married for 2 years in game time, and the spouse died, the character would roll 24D8 to determine the number of days in depression.
Similarly, If the character is ever rejected or their advances turned down by someone the character is romantically interested in, the character will also fall into a similar, but less severe state of depression for 2D8 days. This will cause a -1 penalty to all game mechanics for the duration.
